Gut–Brain Axis in Mental & Cognitive Health: From Microbiome to Mind
The gut and the brain are intricately connected through a dynamic, bidirectional communication network known as the gut–brain axis. This complex system integrates neural, immune, endocrine, metabolic, and microbial signaling pathways that collectively influence cognition, mood, behavior, and neurological health. Over the past decade, groundbreaking research has established the gut microbiome as a key regulator of brain function, positioning it at the forefront of functional and integrative medicine.
This presentation explores how alterations in the intestinal microbiome (dysbiosis), impaired intestinal barrier integrity (“leaky gut”), chronic inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and microbial metabolites contribute to a wide spectrum of neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders. Conditions such as depression, anxiety, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), cognitive decline, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and chronic fatigue syndrome have all been associated with disturbances of the gut ecosystem.
Participants will examine the mechanisms through which gut microbes communicate with the central nervous system, including vagal nerve signaling, immune modulation, production of neurotransmitters and neuroactive compounds, regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, short-chain fatty acid production, bile acid metabolism, and tryptophan metabolism affecting serotonin synthesis. The influence of the gut microbiome on neuroplasticity, neuroinflammation, blood-brain barrier integrity, and stress resilience will also be discussed.
The session will further review current evidence supporting microbiome-targeted interventions, including personalized nutrition, elimination diets, probiotics, prebiotics, postbiotics, synbiotics, psychobiotics, polyphenol-rich foods, fermented foods, fiber optimization, lifestyle modification, stress management, exercise, sleep optimization, and emerging therapies such as fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) in selected clinical settings.
Drawing upon the latest advances in neuroscience, microbiome science, nutritional psychiatry, lifestyle medicine, and functional medicine, this lecture provides clinicians with practical strategies to optimize gut health as a foundation for improving mental health, cognitive performance, emotional resilience, and healthy brain aging.
